In the country that lives and breathes basketball, exciting times in collegiate basketball happen not in March but every August.
In the United States, they call it March Madness- a month-long event where collegiate basketball is at the center stage.
In the Philippines, we have "The Big Dance"
Thirty-two teams come together in an event organized by Pinoyliga Cup that only a few can imagine will happen.
This is not just for the popular ones, not only for those in the metro, but this is for every basketball program that has achieved and performed well in the past 12 months.
Welcome to the big stage, welcome to the Big Dance.
Every game matters, every possession is important, and every team carries the dream to become the squad that goes all the way to be the kings of the Big Dance.
The participating teams came from different leagues, different places, and different cultures, but when the ball is thrown up in the air for the opening tipoff, all are on equal footing.
In the Big Dance, there is no guaranteed tomorrow for a team that loses a game. It's win or go home, do-or-die, it's now or never.
As we get near this annual basketball spectacle, here are some facts that every basketball-loving fan should know about the Pinoyliga - The Big Dance.
SQUARE ONE
The beauty of the Big Dance is that every team earns their victory. No team is guaranteed success once they walk on the court.
Previous records or accomplishments don't matter once the whistle officially starts the game.
THIRTY TWO TEAMS, DIFFERENT STORIES
Each team has its own story to tell. Some have been a dominant force, while others had to crawl from scratch to reach the top.
Some teams are loaded with talent, while others rely on their system to win.
Some depend on their young guns, while some rely on their seniors who are used to pressure-packed situations.
Despite these, all converge in one stage - with one target: win it all.
UPSET IS TRADITION
In the world of basketball, all are aware of upsets as it generates buzz and stories.
A tournament would not be complete without experiencing an upset, as the law of averages haunts everyone.
Only the toughest and the ones who are ready to face the pressure will come out the winner.
In the Big Dance, who would forget the shock that the 28th seed UBIX Colleges gave last year as it defeated the 5th seed LPU Pirates.
Meanwhile, LPU also made some noise two years ago as the then 13th seed pulled down 4th-seeded San Beda Red Lions in the Sweet 16 round.
In 31 games, there will always be someone who will become news - the only question is.
Who will be that one?
A HERO WILL SHINE
In a short and quick tournament, every player is hoping to get a chance to be that person who will be the key to his team's win.
It might be a freshman who plays like a veteran, a sixth man who suddenly plays like a starter, a defensive player who makes an extra effort to thwart the offense of the other team, and a player who, despite the noise in the surroundings, makes an all-important shot.
The Big Dance will have it all - as it has become a platform for players to present themselves, while some use this as their re-introduction to the scene.
The Big Dance not only creates champions but players who are brave enough to be that player in the spotlight.
UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS
The Big Dance serves as a momentum pusher for some teams as they go to their mother leagues for battle.
In The Big Dance, not only will they have a chance to meet teams that they will clash with in their leagues, but also meet other squads from other affiliations, making it intriguing, interesting, and exciting to watch, which may lead to...
NEW RIVALRIES
The Big Dance matchups may be a catalyst for new rivalries as teams who don't usually meet may find themselves engaged in a tightly fought match against a team that plays like themselves. There will also be times that a team may be matched up against a team that may be their kryptonite or kontra-pelo.
These things captivate the imagination and emotions of every school supporter, player, and basketball fan.
PERPETUAL TROPHY
The Pinoyliga Big Dance introduced a perpetual trophy. Worth P200,000, it will be given to the winner of the tournament.
Created by renowned artist Cameron Castrillo, the 3-foot award will be in the possession of the champion for one year and will be passed to the next winner of the tournament the following year.
If a team wins the title three consecutive years, it gets to keep the said work of art.
EXCITEMENT STARTS NOW
As the calendar flips to the month of August, teams will get ready to leave everything on the court.
The passion, the emotion, and the school spirit will be on display.
