In the country that lives and breathes basketball, exciting times in collegiate basketball happen not in March but every August.

In the United States, they call it March Madness- a month-long event where collegiate basketball is at the center stage.

In the Philippines, we have "The Big Dance"

Thirty-two teams come together in an event organized by Pinoyliga Cup that only a few can imagine will happen.

This is not just for the popular ones, not only for those in the metro, but this is for every basketball program that has achieved and performed well in the past 12 months.

Welcome to the big stage, welcome to the Big Dance.

Every game matters, every possession is important, and every team carries the dream to become the squad that goes all the way to be the kings of the Big Dance.

The participating teams came from different leagues, different places, and different cultures, but when the ball is thrown up in the air for the opening tipoff, all are on equal footing.

In the Big Dance, there is no guaranteed tomorrow for a team that loses a game. It's win or go home, do-or-die, it's now or never.

In the Big Dance, who would forget the shock that the 28th seed UBIX Colleges gave last year as it defeated the 5th seed LPU Pirates.

Meanwhile, LPU also made some noise two years ago as the then 13th seed pulled down 4th-seeded San Beda Red Lions in the Sweet 16 round.

PERPETUAL TROPHY

The Pinoyliga Big Dance introduced a perpetual trophy. Worth P200,000, it will be given to the winner of the tournament.

Created by renowned artist Cameron Castrillo, the 3-foot award will be in the possession of the champion for one year and will be passed to the next winner of the tournament the following year.

If a team wins the title three consecutive years, it gets to keep the said work of art.

EXCITEMENT STARTS NOW

As the calendar flips to the month of August, teams will get ready to leave everything on the court.
