Winning When It Matters: MCU Shocks BCP to Keep Season Alive in Pinoyliga Play-ins

The standings don’t matter once the playoffs begin.

After finishing winless in the Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup Season 5 elimination round, the MCU Supremos entered the play-ins with nothing to lose. Five losses left them at the bottom of the standings, but the knockout stage offered something every team hopes for: a fresh start.

They did not waste their chance.

Behind a composed overtime performance, the Supremos stunned the BCP Kalasag, 85-82, to keep their season alive and send one of the tournament's most starling teams packing.

It wasn’t pretty, nor was it easy. For MCU, it was simply winning when it mattered most.

In an ironic twist, the Supremos eliminated the very team that had built its identity on late-game heroics, with a clutch finish of their own.

Throughout the elimination round, BCP earned a reputation as the tournament’s “Comeback kings.” Time and again, the Kalasag erased second-half deficits through disciplined halftime adjustments and clutch fourth-quarter execution. Every game seemed to end the same way - with BCP finding another gear.

This time, there was no comeback waiting.

MCU dictated the pace early, opening the game with an eight-point lead in the opening quarter before BCP slowly settled into the game. By halftime, the Kalasg cut the deficit to just three points before finally taking control in the third quarter. 

It looked like another classic BCP comeback was unfolding.

Momentum had shifted. But the Supremos refused to let the game slip away.

Foul after foul sent MCU to the free-throw line, and the numbers tell the story. 

BCP had 24 team fouls compared to MCU’s 14, allowing the Supremos to attempt 35 free throws. MCU capitalized, converting 22 points from the charity stripe. A late foul in the fourth quarter by BCP sent the game into overtime, where the Supremos finally seized control to escape with the 85-82 victory.

Player of the game David Odior delivered in the biggest moments, finishing with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 blocks, and 2 steals. Eight of his points came during the crucial stretch of the fourth quarter. He received plenty of support from Renz Javier, who added 15 points, while Zyglian Sicat chipped in 12 as MCU completed one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. 

Despite another gritty performance from the Kalasag, the comeback never came. The team that had made a habit of rescuing itself in the closing minutes was denied one final rally.

For MCU, the victory represented more than a single win. The supremos finally found the only win that truly mattered.

The elimination round is over. Records have been erased. Momentum can change in an instant, and one inspired performance can rewrite an entire tournament. 

Next up for the Supremos is perhaps their toughest challenge yet: a showdown against the eight-time NAASCU champions, the Saint Clare Saints.
