Consistent by Design: Carl Nocum’s Rise in the Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup

Some players announce themselves with a single moment. Carl Nocum has been doing it quietly, game after game.

Three consecutive games. Three times scoring 21 points. It’s the kind of consistency that doesn’t happen by accident. In his third game, the numbers finally came with the recognition to match: Nocum was named Player of the Game in one of the most dramatic finishes of Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup Season 5.

What makes Nocum’s run more compelling is the growth visible beyond the scoring column. In his first game against St. Clare, he put up 21 points, a rebound, and a steal. In his second where they battled the OLFU Phoenix, he added 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block to the same 21-point output. In this last game, he contributed 5 rebounds and an assist, alongside the now-familiar 21 points. Game by game, Nocum has been doing more, filling in the gaps, and steadily expanding his game.

His MVP performance came in the kind of game that test character. LPU had a commanding lead through much of the game, but BCP fought their way back, eventually tying the game in the fourth quarter. What had been a comfortable cushion had become a genuine threat.

When BCP began their comeback, Nocum admitted that the shift caught LPU off guard. Their defense collapsed, and he had to find stillness in the chaos, meditating himself through the pressure to stay locked in. That kind of mental composure, as much as the 21 points or the stat sheet, is what sets him apart.

In those moments, Nocum kept attacking. He continued his driving to the basket, drawing fouls, and converting. He didn’t let the pressure get to him. As the seconds ticked away, he told himself and his team, “ Tuloy lang. Di pa bumabuzzer. Tuloy tuloy lang". It was Brix Reyno who delivered the finish, snatching the offensive rebound, converting the put-back with barely milliseconds remaining, and drawing the foul, sealing the win for LPU without the need for overtime.

Three games. The same number every time. But each one is a little fuller, a little sharper, a little more complete. Carl Nocum isn’t just being consistent, he's building toward something. The Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup may just be the stage where everyone catches on.
