"He knows Philippine basketball at the back of his head" That's exactly what Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings Head Coach Tim Cone said when he vouched for Sean Chambers.
Of course, Tim Cone, the winningest coach in the history of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) knows what his former resident import with the Alaska franchise as together. won six PBA championships. Cone made the statement over the weekend when reports came out that the 55-year old Chambers has expressed interest in applying for the head coaching job at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers at a time when the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) imposed an indefinite ban on former UST Coach Aldin Ayo as a result of the team's bubble trouble in Sorsogon.
While UST legends have been leading the race to replace Ayo at the helm, Sean Chambers officially added himself into the mix. "When I started looking at positions in the past in the Philippines, this is the first one that actually felt naturally right. It felt like this is an opportunity that I felt, it could have God's blessing," he shared on "Athlete's Tribune" Monday night. Chambers also revealed that he has been on the lookout for the top coaching duties at Espana since 2017 right after Boy Sablan vacated the post. At that time, Chambers "felt that it wasn't the right time (to take a coaching job)" as his children were still young.
His children now are young adults which for Chambers, "This gives me an opportunity to really entertain a position in the Philippines, and that was a little bit challenging before, eight or nine years ago,"
UST is still being rocked by the departure of players who opt to play elsewhere with the team\s future still filled with uncertainties for Season 83 and possibly beyond. But for Chambers, the Tiger Nation can rise again.
