A major movement rocked the Pinoyliga collegiate basketball rankings this week as we saw a change in the top spot.

After weeks of chasing the shadows of their rivals from the UAAP, UP and La Salle, the National University Bulldogs have finally reached the summit and overtaken the NCAA kingpins, the San Beda Red Lions.

Unbeaten in three matches this week, the Bulldogs were able to sneak past the Red Lions to reach the #1 spot for the first time this season.

The Bulldogs defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a close match in the UBelt Cup, and they followed it up with an 8-point win over the Adamson Soaring Falcons in the FilOil Preseason Cup.

But the biggest victory of NU this week came in the quarterfinals of NSAC as it nipped the UP Fighting Maroons to enter the semifinals of the said tournament.

San Beda's lone game this week was against its archrivals, the Letran Knights, whom they defeated in the NSAC's quarters.

The Bulldogs' tenure on the top spot will depend on this weekend's matchup as NU and San Beda meet in the semifinals of the NSAC tournament.

The Fighting Maroons, meanwhile, fell two spots in the rankings while DLSU managed to move up a notch as it showed nerves of steel in the two matches wherein they came away with 1-point wins against the UST Growling Tigers and FEU Tamaraws in Filoil and NSAC.

Completing the top five for this week are the JRU Heavy Bombers, who have been unbeaten for the past few games in the tournaments they have joined.

UST remained on the 6th spot after splitting its games this week against DLSU and Ateneo but has an opportunity to slightly move up if it can hurdle its opponents this week, including another meet-up against the Green Archers, this time in the NSAC semifinals.

A big mover this week is the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals. Powered by their overtime victory over Adamson in the Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup Season 5, the Generals are now in the 7th spot, as they have shown confidence in each other. Behind them are the Letran Knights, who have been showing their resiliency that has kept them competitive in their games.

FEU slips one notch to 9th, and despite the loss, the Morayta-based school has shown that they are growing strong each tournament and that they can compete with other squads.

Completing the top 10 is the Benilde Blazers, who lost to the Knights in a close match in Filoil. The Blazers remain dangerous as ever, but as this week has shown, the battle has been tight, and a slight misstep can cause a drop in the rankings.

Rising three spots are the Arellano Chiefs and St. Clare Saints, who have been building momentum with statement wins against the Ateneo Blue Eagles and FEU. The Chiefs and Saints are now ranked 11th and 12th, respectively.

Falling to the 13th spot is Ateneo, whose 0-3 record this week pulled them down. Despite the losses, a bright future is up ahead for the Katipunan-based squad as the new players are slowly but surely getting used to the system of Coach Tab Baldwin.

Adamson, meanwhile, has lost twice this week, as it brought them down to 14th. Coach Nash Racela and the rest of his staff are trying to find the correct combinations in their games, allowing their players to play their game while implementing the team's system.

Splitting their matches this week are the Perpetual Altas, who stand in the 15th spot. Despite their loss to JRU, the Altas were able to bounce back with a victory against the Enderun Titans. Coach Olsen Racela has allowed his young players to flourish in every game.

The Enderun Titans, despite losing their game against the Altas, jumped in the rankings as they have shown that they can be competitive against stronger teams, with Joey Panganiban and CJ Garcia slowly making their mark as leaders of the squad.

Week 5 has shown that statement wins can push a team up while losses can derail one's upward motion. It is interesting to see the results of the games up ahead, especially for other teams who are yearning for recognition and breakthrough.
