Earlier this week, the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) through Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes has assured the MPBL fans that the MPBL has no intention of abandoning what was left of the MPBL playoffs as the Makati Super Crunch and the San Juan Knights, as well as the Davao Occidental Tigers and the Basilan Steel only need to seal the deal in the Game Three of their respective Division Finals to determine who will face will in the MPBL Finals. With that being said, we can expect the 2020-2021 season of the MPBL to start later than originally planned.
The 2020-2021 season of the MPBL is originally slated to open on June 12, 2020, which falls on the country's celebration of our 122nd Independence Day. However, that plan has inevitably been shelved as a result of the national government's extending the enhanced community quarantine period that has been placed in high-risk areas in the country until May 15.
In a memorandum issued by Commissioner Duremdes that released April 28, 2020, the league is indefinitely postponing the opening of the 2020-2021 season thus pushing back the entire season furthermore. And considering the uncertainty that the world is facing, we shouldn't be surprised if the MPBL won't open until next year. Duremdes also reiterated the league's heeding the government's call for leagues and every Filipino to follow every regulation in these trying times.
In conclusion, Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes pointed out that once the situation allows them to do so, the league will prioritize finishing the ongoing 2019-2020 season. After all, both divisions only need to settle who will go to the Finals in a pair of winner-take-all matches. While the 2020-2021 season is still a question mark, Duremdes assured that the league is working to serve the interest of the league and more importantly, the Filipino fans. After all, the MPBL is the league of every Filipino.
