Aaron Atayde opened the discussion by stating that "The exodus of UST players continues,"
And so does the hunt for the next head coach of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
Tuesday's episode of Jump Thru Hoops allotted the first part of its show discussing what has happened thus far with the Growling Tigers as the alleged bubble training that the team underwent in Sorsogon has become a full-blown exodus with players leaving Espana to get playing opportunities elsewhere. While Mark Nonoy's transfer to the De La Salle Green Archers excites Aaron Atayde, he and Jinno Rufino also discussed the potential answers to this question: What makes the coaching job at UST the most sought-after coaching job in the local basketball scene?
Over the past few days, many names have been added to the list of those who applied for the post vacated by Aldin Ayo with the latest being Sean Chambers and Aris Dimaunahan. As Rufino pointed, "That's a lot of names and relatively big names that are gunning for the spot."
Considering the number of players that UST has lost thus far in the exodus, whoever takes over at the helm in Espana will have a difficult job, and as Rufino asked, "How do you rebuild?"
He then explained his thoughts on why many are interested in coaching a team that lost so many players. "As a coach, it will be a faster implementation of your system into the culture of UST because you're starting basically from the foundation. You're gonna build it from there," he says. Rufino also explained that coming into a different program in a different school means big adjustments are needed to be made if you're a new coach. He compared this to being the new coach of the UST Growling Tigers, "You really have the chance to build from the ground up and basically build your legacy in a storied university that has been known for winning overall championships,"
