UAAP suspends games due to COVID-19

All scheduled events of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) scheduled starting on Tuesday, March 10 until Saturday, March 14 are suspended as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise in the Philippines.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning by UAAP President Emmanuel T. Fernandez and UAAP Executive Director Rebo Saguisag, they announced the suspension of all activities after President Duterte ordered class suspension at all levels in Metro Manila until March 14.

“The President of the Philippines has declared a State of Public Health Emergency and has ordered the suspension of classes in ALL levels in Metro Manila until March 14,” the statement read.

“More importantly, the President stated that “students (are) to be confined in their homes and will continue to study…,” it added.

The coronavirus outbreak has greatly affected Philippine sports events.

On Monday, the championship games in UAAP high school basketball tournament behind closed doors at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan as well as the upcoming games for the 2020 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) also moved back the opening of its 45th season by a week.

President Duterte has placed the country under a state of public health emergency after the DOH announced that there were 24 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines.
