The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Coaches’ Summit was a rousing success over the weekend at the Meralco Gym after more than 300 coaches from all over the country attended the two-day event.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao led the list of speakers in the summit where he touched on the topic of how to win with less talent. Guiao told coaches to invest on skills development and conditioning in order to catch up with other teams.
Guiao also encouraged coaches to tell their players to “make the playing time count” instead of “counting the playing time” as well as “make the 12th player feel equally important as the No. 1 player.”
Gilas Pilipinas Youth coach Sandy Arespacochaga, meanwhile, touched on the topic of managing student athletes where he emphasized that “life skills should be part of what we teach to our players.”
“If their minds are engaged in the classroom, it would be easier for them to be engaged in what we are doing inside the court,” said Arespacochaga.
Australian coach Dean Vickerman and Damian Cotter also joined in the discussion where they spoke about the ball screen motion offense, the post game, and middle ball screen.
Vickerman also touched on developing a youth program, and Cotter also discussed 3x3 basketball during the coaches’ summit.
Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines (BCAP) president and Jose Rizal University coach Louie Gonzalez was also present in the summit as he discussed on fundamentals.
