One team was aiming to return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. The other team was trying to extend its season. In the end, the latter succeeded.
The Boston Celtics outscored the Miami Heat, 41-25 in the third quarter alone, en route to a 121-108 Game Five victory in the National Basketball Association (NBA) Eastern Conference Finals and extended this best-of-seven series to a Game Six. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown delivered a one-two punch for Boston as Tatum and Brown finished with 31 points and 28 points respectively. Tatum also had 10 rebounds and six assists while Brown added eight rebounds and shot four for 10 from the three-point line. Kemba Walker and Daniel Theis each had 15 points while Marcus Smart had 12 points, eight rebounds, eight assists,. and four steals. Gordon Hayward finished with 10 points off the bench for the Celtics who recovered from a 12-point deficit. Boston outrebounded Miami, 50-38, and outscored the Heat in the paint, 56-48.
Goran Dragic led Miami with 23 points but shot one for seven from the three-point line. Duncan Robinson finished with 20 points but struggled offensively as Robinson shot three for 11 from long distance. Four other Miami players scored at least 13 points with Game Four hero, Tyler Herro finishing with 14 points. Miami was misfiring from the three-point line all game long as they shot seven for 36 from downtown. More importantly, they couldn't recover after giving up 41 points in the third quarter.
