No. Calvin Abueva won't be playing in the upcoming PBA Philippine Cup as PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said that The Beast's suspension from last year will remain a suspension. That, at least during the all-Filipino conference. Beyond that? It's another story.
And according to Commissioner Marcial, Calvin Abueva still has two more stages to undergo before the commissioner could talk to the PBA Board about lifting the suspension. While the commissioner didn't specify the said stages, Marcial pointed out that he was impressed with the way Abueva has done for him to get closer to getting back into PBA action. However, as controversial as he always has been in the past, questions seem to be following Abueva anywhere he goes. In fact, those questions even followed him to an MPBL game.
Calvin Abueva has been spotted during the start of the North Division semifinals of the MPBL last Friday and he even gave pre-game talks to his hometown team, the Pampanga Giant Lanterns. He was even jokingly taunted by Carlo Lastimosa during the latter's game between Manila and Makati. Obviously, this begged the question: What was Calvin Abueva doing in an MPBL game?
There are two reasons why he was there.
First, to support the Pampanga Giant Lanterns. After all, he is one of the many Pampanga natives in the PBA and it's normal for any player to show his undying support to his hometown. And secondly?
His Dampa ni The Beast restaurant is situated near the Filoil Flying V Center so he decided to check the games out.
Additionally, he said he was only there to support the team.
Even MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Durmedes appreciated the fact that Abueva supports the Giant Lanterns even as they fell to the San Juan Knights on a Mike Ayonayon heartbreaking buzzer-beater.
While there's no word as to whether or not we'll see Calvin Abueva play for his home province in the MPBL, never say never as they say. But for now, he's merely a spectator.
