Making the hard decision to "come down" to the MPBL when you have established yourself as a solid PBA player, may be a bitter pill to swallow for some for it can be the start of a continued downward spiral. For some, with the right frame of mind and a strong commitment to improvement, it can be a springboard to bigger and better things. Which is exactly what happened to Mac Mac Cardona and John Wilson - champions with the San Juan Knights - Go For Gold.
Wilson came out of college a pedigreed scorer. Coming out as a legit scoring threat from both the inside and the outside, he went on to become a first round draft pick. Together with that of course are high expectations. Stops at teams like Ginebra and Meralco proved to be short and fleeting with those expectation still hanging and unmet.
We all know the story of Cardona. Captain Hook, as he is called, went on to become a PBA Player of Conference awardee with star status already part of his calling card. But troubles inside and outside the court has made the transition to superstar impossible. The transition to the San Juan Knights was the break that both players were blessed with. An opportunity to bring back their game.
The story of Wilson and Cardona serves as an inspiration to players in similar situations. PBA may be the peak, but there will always be other mountains to climb where glory can be found.
