Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao noted the importance of hitting their outside shots in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China.
Gilas is about to face stiff competition when they play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, with world-class opponents Italy, Serbia, and Angola in their schedule.
During Guiao’s guesting at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum last Tuesday, Guiao emphasized the need for consistent conversion of their outside shooting.
“When we’re shooting well, we win games. When we’re shooting well, it becomes a little bit easier to win games. That’s exactly true in the tune-up games that we played,” said Guiao.
Guiao also noted Gilas Pilipinas loss to Adelaide 36ers last Sunday when they struggled to hit the outside shots.
“Nung Sunday, ang sama ng shooting natin, hindi natin tinalo ang Australia. First time, maganda ang shooting natin, tinalo natin sila,” Guiao added.
“It’s the same way in Spain. The only bad game we played was the game against Congo when we shot really bad from the outside. But the three games that we won in Spain, we were really shooting well,” he added.
Gilas will start its campaign in the FIBA Basketball World Cup against Italy on August 31. The national squad will then take on Serbia on September 2, before capping off the group stage with a match against Angola on September 4.
“Crucial ang outside shooting natin, pero I feel these guys can step up when the time comes,” Guiao noted.
