Gilas Pilipinas Women edged China, 14-11, last Saturday to clinch the country’s first medal, a bronze, in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 Under-18 Asia Cup in Malaysia.
The team of Kristine Cayabyab, Camille Izabel Clarin, Ella Patrice Fajardo, and Angelica Marie Surada beat the top-seed China in the bronze medal match in the women’s division to cap off their impressive showing in the tournament.
The Gilas Women avenged their 16-14 loss to China in the tournament opener to take home a medal in the competition.
The squad coached by Patrick Aquino beat Malaysia, 19-8, in Group A play to secure a berth in the quarterfinals where they beat New Zealand, 11-9.
The Philippines was toppled by Australia, 15-12, but that didn’t stop Gilas Pilipinas Women from picking up a medal.
Australia later won the gold medal after beating Japan in the final.
