The Gilas Pilipinas Women had an inauspicious debut as it got walloped by Australia, 123-57, at the start of the 2019 Fiba Women’s Asia Cup on Tuesday at Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India.

With a squad boasting of a number of players who have played in the WNBA, Australia raced off to a 38-16 lead after the first period to blow the wind out of the sails of the Filipinas early.

The Australians continued to pound the Gilasin the second half where they outscored them, 66-23.

Ezi Magbegor, the 12th pick in the WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm, had 18 points while Jenna O’Hea, another former WNBA player, put up 17 points.

Gemma Miranda led the Gilas with 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists while Afril Bernardino added 15 markers.

The Gilas’ road in this tournament gets even tougher as it takes on China on Wednesday.
