Except Gilas Pilipinas Women to have a tough time in the quarterfinals as they look to pull off an upset against Australia in the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2019 in Changsha, China.
The team of Jack Animam, Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos and Clare Castro are facing difficult odds in their quarterfinal match against Australia.
For one, the Australians, ranked No. 8 in the tournament, pulled off a major upset when they beat top-seed China, 16-14, in pool play. They also won over New Zealand, 17-15, to sweep their group.
Gilas Pilipinas Women will also be facing a tall team with Alice Kunek and Hanna Zavecz standing at 6-0 each battling the 6-foot-4 Castro and 6-foot-1 Animam. Australia also has a 5-11 player in Madeleine Garrick.
The Philippines will also have its hands full against Australia’s Rebecca Cole, who is the top player of the team with her 1855 world ranking and 91,550 ranking points with FIBA.
Still, Gilas Pilipinas Women are determined to pull off an upset, having already gone deep in the tournament with Bernardino and Pontejos looking to do some damage on the offensive side of the ball.
The winner of the Australia-Philippines quarterfinal match will take on either second-seed Mongolia or fifth-ranked Turkmenistan.
