Gilas Piipinas Women also competing in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2019

The Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3x3 team, just like its men’s counterparts, will see action in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup from May 23 to 26 in Changsha, China.

The team will be spearheaded by UAAP MVPs Jack Animam and Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, and Clare Castro.

Women’s basketball program director Patrick Aquino will be accompanying the four players, who are some of the best in the country today.

“These are the best that we have,” said Aquino in a recent guesting at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

Gilas Pilipinas Women’s is bracketed with Chinese Taipei, Vanuatu, and Samoa in Qualifying Draw A with the nation that will top the group will advance into Pool C. There, they will be facing Japan and Sri Lanka.

If they go deep again, Aquino said they will be facing formidable foes, but is not thinking far ahead.

“If we advance, then we will face the tougher teams like Japan, China and New Zealand. You have to qualify to the main tournament. The goal is to make it there,” said Aquino.

Aquino also said the 3x3 team in the Asia Cup will also most probably compose the team to the Southeast Asian Games.

“Probably this will be the same team for the SEA Games. They will also be part of our 5-on-5 team,” Aquino said.
