SAN JUAN -- San Beda tightened their leadership grip at the Group A at the FilOil FlyingV Preseason Cup after smothering Arellano in an all-NCAA matchup, 72-58 to cap off the seniors division play at the FilOil FlyingV Centre Monday evening.
After getting into a close encounter in the opening ten minutes, the Red Lions clawed the Chiefs apart in the succeeding quarters for their fourth win in as many games.
The defending NCAA champions put a premium on defense as they held the incoming NCAA hosts to just 18 first half points, 8 of them in the second with Arellano fired a miserable 17% in the first 20 minutes.
Donald Tankoua led San Beda with 16 points and 9 rebounds, with James Canlas and Calvin Oftana picking up 15 and 12 points respectively. Oftana also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double off the bench.
Rence Alcoriza and Kent Salado each had 14 for the Chiefs who were officially eliminated from contention after dropping to 1-5.
