SAN JUAN -- San Beda showed why they are the top overall seed in the FilOil FlyingV Preseason Cup playoffs, as they booked their Final Four ticket with a 60-52 win over FEU in the penultimate game of the quarterfinals Monday afternoon at the FilOil FlyingV Centre.
The unbeaten Red Lions ended the five-game winning streak of the Tamaraws to extend their own run to eight games, thanks to their display of lockdown defense all game long, forcing FEU to 22 turnovers compared to just 10 of San Beda.
Evan Nelle had 16 points on a 50% field-goal shooting to lead the defending NCAA champions, who will face Adamson on Thursday in their record eleventh semifinal appearance.
From the opening tip, San Beda went full cylinder from the start, as they opened the game with a 17-2 run in the first three minutes to set up a seven point lead in the first. They slowed down in the second for a 25-21 half time lead.
However, FEU regrouped in the third to level the game but that was their closest they got as Red Lions locked them down in the final frame, limiting them to just a free throw before the three-minute mark.
Barkley Ebona had eight points to lead the Tams before fouling out with 19.5 seconds left as they exit the tournament.
