#FilOil2019: San Beda claw Mapua-Malayan apart in a battle of Juniors powerhouses

SAN JUAN -- San Beda-Taytay made sure of its intentions in the Juniors Division of the FilOil - Flying V Preseason Cup, clawing Mapua - Malayan apart, 86-68 to open Group A action.

The Red Cubs and the Red Robins had evenly split  44 NCAA Juniors titles between them, but it was the roar of the former who stomped its class against the current champions, holding them to just 22 first half points while bullying their way inside for a wire-to-wire win.

Small forward Justine Sanchez defined what efficiency is all about as he led all scorers with 19 points in just 18 minutes, and added 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a block for San Beda, with Jay Ynot and transferee Rhayyan Amsali posted double-doubles.

Ynot followed Sanchez with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while the former NU Bullpup had his with 16 markers and 11 boards, plus 4 assists for San Beda, who led by 25 entering the break.

The Yong Garcia era for Mapua started on the wrong foot, as the Red Robins committed 23 turnovers while shooting just 35% from the field, missing all of their 11 tries from beyond the arc. Jonnel Policarpio had 10 points for the Red Robins.
