SAN JUAN -- UST had to pull away in the final frame to get their first win of the 13th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup Monday evening at the FilOil FlyingV Centre after keeping Arellano winless with a 84-73 decision.
Aldin Ayo's Growling Tigers banked on their hot shooting the entire game, firing in 14 threes as part of their 42% clip to get the win against the Chiefs who were entering the game with the same 0-2 cards in Group A.
Mark Nonoy waxed hot to lead all scorers with 29 points, including 6/11 from downtown and hauled down 5 rebounds for UST, who were without Soulemane Chabi Yo and Marvin Lee in sight.
The Tigers were dominating for the entire game, leading by as much as 16 before leading by nine at the break.
Arellano even won the third as they slashed it to just three early in the fourth before disaster struck, with head coach Cholo Martin ejected with 8:49 left in the game after being issued his second technical foul.
The Chiefs never recovered from there as Nonoy waxed hot, scoring UST's next ten points after Brent Paraiso's technical free throw to put the incoming NCAA hosts away.
Kent Salado led Arellano with 25 points in a losing effort.
