Despite blowing a double-digit advantage, Angola willed their way to get their first win of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, dealing the Philippines a Group D shutout with an 84-81 squeaker in overtime Wednesday afternoon in Foshan, China.
Will Voigt's men became the first African team to defeat the five-time Asian champions, after needing five more minutes to eke out their first win of the tournament, a much needed boost ahead of the classification round in Beijing on Friday.
Former Hawaii slotman Valdelicio Joaquim led Angola with 20 points on a 60% field goal shooting, along with 7 rebounds for a PER of 24 in 31 minutes of action, with Yannick Moreira and naturalized player Reggie Moore pitched in 12 apiece.
Moreira added a game-high 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Andray Blatche woke from his pair of nightmares against Italy and Serbia to post a double-double of 23 markers and 12 rebounds for Gilas Pilipinas, but the comeback they made was short-lived as their outside shooting doomed them to go bottom of the group after hitting only for 10/46 from beyond the arc.
A huge second half did it for Angola that got Gilas into the ropes, as they made their first double-digit spread in the third when they hit 8 unanswered for a 46-38 lead, and they led by as much as 12 in the fourth, 61-49 on Joaquim's free throws.
However, Yeng Guiao's men found their higher gear and launched a crippling 20-4 reply which was punctuated by Japeth Aguilar's putback slam with less than three minutes left.
But Carlos Morais fought back and scored six of their eight points down the stretch to get back up front, before CJ Perez sent the game into overtime with a wide open three of his own, before missing his game winner at the horn.
Gilas continued their momentum but crumbled under immense pressure as the experience of Angola showed, in which they put up a five-point cushion in the late stages and held on for a huge win after Kiefer Ravena missed his desparation trey in the dying seconds.
