When you spiral around Pasig City, searching for the community coined as “Brgy. Grabe”, you know you are in for some great time.
Together with Mr. Pinoy Hoops himself, Mike Swift, we forged on a cloudy Monday sharing one vision; to empower the local community of Brgy. “Grabe” by lending our hands for the betterment of this thing we all share a common love for: local hoops.
With hopeful grins, we drove off with all our paints and materials at the back of our truck. Mr. Swift was sure that bayanihan is not dead and will be seen in its living form later as we re-paint the local court of the community.
Arriving at the location, it dawned to us that Brgy. “Grabe” could just be a moniker by its people, but its real name still holds true: Brgy. Maybunga, in all its realness, is a fruit of its people’s labor. It was a humble community that the people all worked hard for. To attest, the half-court was sitting right in the middle of their homes. It is an attraction at the heart of the community.
True enough, the people were no stranger in working hard as we all went on to clean and paint the area.
The locals were all eager to help, moving in unison as the elderly and the youth all shared their part in re-painting. A few friends also dropped by to help. The court was an everyday necessity for them, and it showed as we all saw the smiles and well-words as we finish the design before the sun went out.
Kings of the Court’s logo was painted on their wall, as homage to the people’s characteristic that we personally experienced: imbuing respect, honor, and distinction.
It was amazing how re-painting the half court of Brgy. “Grabe” served as a beacon of empowerment. The kids and elderly alike gave a nod of assurance on what we’ve done - a “thank you”, on their own gesture.
Painting the court not only makes the place more beautiful, but also lifts up the peoples’ morale and may we dare say, give them hope. Stepping-back, checking the whole scene before farewells were made, one thing is concluded: this is why we do what we do.
Every court can dream.
