Duty calls for The Kraken

As a five-time PBA Most Valuable Player, June Mar Fajardo is entitled to what he wants to do. After all, he has just helped the San Miguel Beermen clinch the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup title in six games against the TNT Katropa.

But you’ve got to admire his resolve to answer the call of duty for Gilas Pilipinas in the same day that the Beermen were having a victory party at the San Miguel headquarters in Pasig City. Perhaps he has a been-there-done-that mantra when it comes to championships and the consequent celebrations. Better yet, he is just grateful for the opportunities and blessing coming his way.

That could explain why he chose to report for practice with the national team rather than toasting to winning another crown. With all the opportunities to play for flag and country that he missed in the past, Fajardo reports for duty even though his shoulder isn’t fully healed. In an utmost sign of humility, The Kraken honors his commitment just in time for the FIBA World Cup in China.

Talk about setting an example for athletes here and abroad. The best player in the sport is offering his services once again hours after he battled in a close-out game. More importantly, the top baller in the land restores the value of playing for the nation. If only those NBA players who backed out from the USA men’s basketball team will learn about the selfless act of this gentle giant from Cebu.

With the World Cup just over a week away, it feels great to have JMF back in the mix. There’s still time to reintegrate himself to Coach Yeng Guiao’s system and to his Gilas teammates as well. He is ready for the grind that comes with the daily practices and the two scrimmage games against the Adelaide 36ers. This time, he is not leaving anything to chance.

Gilas’ preparations just got a big boost from the alpha male of Philippine basketball. Certainly, everyone will be inspired to work harder if the boss is doing the same. A man of few words, Fajardo sent his message loud and clear by letting his puso for the Philippines and for the sport take over.
