Benny Benitez's Bull By The Horn will have a pair of tireless team managers in our second episode on Saturday, June 6, as they detailing the life and work that made their alma maters the benchmarks of Philippine college basketball.
Epok Quimpo and Jude Roque were ever present figures for Ateneo and San Beda, and together they have put a lot of effort to make the old rivals in the NCAA such household names in school sports, as they are the most dominant teams that have monopolized the scene as they are going live on Pinoyliga TV at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
Both teams tread different paths to where they are right now.
Quimpo, the diminutive yet dynamic gunner whose timely three-pointers became integral to an unlikely 2002 title for the Blue Eagles, took the job in 2013 by succeeding Paolo Trillo who had capped off his nine-year stint with a five-peat. Under Quimpo, Ateneo had a tough four-year patch before firing three UAAP titles in a row at the end of the decade, highlighted by their 16-0 sweep in their recent conquest.
On the other hand, Roque already get used to the life on the bench, as he was there in the original iteration of Gilas in the early part of the 2010s before getting his current job from another San Beda legend in Mike Advani in 2012. Under Coach Jude, San Beda extended their dominance in which they won all but two NCAA titles this decade, with Letran the only other team to win it by spoiling the Red Lions' plans of their six-peat and their unbeaten record from last season.
Along with the previous coaching stints, he also does media work before with his stints as an analyst for PBA Rush and writing for both Yahoo and The Manila Times.
