It was a roller coaster ride for San Juan's John Wilson to begin the season, as the defending MPBL Champions just got past the skin of their teeth to start the season.
After two games in the offing, Wilson averaged 13 points against Bacoor and Pasay on a 30% clip from downtown. Not to mention that he fouled out on his first game against the Strikers.
But being a shooter, he has the license. Every. Single. Time.
Even with his slow release that has been his trademark.
That bore fruit last Thursday when the former JRU stalwart let his long bombs fly, leading all scorers with 25 points for a fifteen point victory over Rizal.
He made up from his 4/11 shooting from beyond the arc by only missing one of his shots from inside of the rainbow country, a proof that shooters like him have the range to do it.
"Every game na dumadating sa amin, lagi kaming nagpeprepare. Iba yung sa team practice, iba yung sa sarili ko," he said as he credit his individual workout to polish his game.
For him, their win over the Golden Coolers is refreshing to their minds, knowing that the rest of the league keep a close eye on them, knowing that they are the current kings of the court.
"Hindi na katulad dati, lahat ng kalaban namin madali na," he added. "Over confident na kami sa first two games namin, kaya sabi ni Coach Randy [Alcantara] kanina na sana manalo kami ng decisive, kaya nakuha na."
As they prepare for the second of their five game road trip in July later tonight, Wilson echoed his coach's battle cry to ignore the people outside the court and play their game.
"Trabahuin natin ng maaga. Habang nandun tayo sa court, i-shut down natin yung miron para di mabuhayan yung kalaban namin."
