A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN - THE MABL SEASON 7

The MASCI ALUMNI BASKETBALL LEAGUE is a one of a kind tournament that is participated in annually by at least 300 Manila Science High School Alumni representing batches from the past 4 decades. 

Conceptualized back in mid 2012 by a handful of alumni led by Burt Aurelio (Batch 2001), they reached out to several batches both directly after and before them to put up teams and play. Getting their most distinguished alumni sportsman, Alvin Patrimonio (Batch 83) to gather his batchmates to play heightened the interest, snowballing enough to elicit support from at least a dozen teams.

Thus, the inaugural season kicked off at The Zone Makati on January 13, 2013 pioneered by 12 teams (1983, 1988-92, 1990-86, 1997-98, 1999, 2000,2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008). Batch 1983 would eventually win the 1st title after coming back from a 0-1 deficit in the finals against batch 2005.

Immediately after the tournament concluded, the league sent a collection of MABL selection to the Inter Science Alumni League. Using a battle cry of “Husay MaSci”, that team would eventually win the title in a pulsating win over QueSci in September of the same year, coinciding with MaSci’s 50th Founding Anniversary, 

The following season, the league expanded to 15 teams with batches 1986, 1993 and 2010-11-12 joining. Batch 1994 joined in season 3, and batch 1996 in season 4.

In those 6 seasons, there were 6 different champions, 1983, 1988-92, 1999, 2001, 1994 and the 80’s mix (81-82-83-85-86-88) in that particular order.

Even with season 7 seeing team participation being reduced to 10, the league is still very much vibrant and alive. With several batches merging to form a more competitive line up, the competition will be raised again to a higher level, showing not only the MasSian’s love for the sport, but also showing a renewed sense of basketball brotherhood amongst the players. And this bodes well for the future of the MABL.
