In collegiate basketball, repeated close losses can easily break a team's resolve,
For the JRU Heavy Bombers, head coach Nani Epondulan refused to let that happen.
Turning close games into a testing ground for character, Epondulan has focused less on individual glory and more on collective survival. As the season wears on, the team's veteran leaders have had to realize a hard truth: carrying the load alone is a dead end.
"Unti-unti, natatanggap na ng mga leaders ng team namin na hindi nila kayang dalawa (Hubilla, Mangubat), na kailangan nilang i-involve 'yung mga teammates nila," Epondulan shared. "Credit din sa mga bench at role players namin na ready for the challenge."
That shift in mindset has opened the door for depth players to step up when the stakes are highest, transforming JRU from a team reliant on stars into a deeply resilient unit where everyone is accountable.
For Epondulan, returning to his alma mater to build this culture requires a careful balance of hunger and humility. Success on the floor means nothing if the team loses its footing.
As the final minutes tick away and the pressure mounts, the ultimate goal remains front and center: bringing the championship trophy back to Shaw Boulevard. But to get there, the formula is simple.
"Huwag kayong makuntento," Epondulan stressed to his squad. "Always eyes up kay Lord, and then 'yung feet on the ground. Stay humble, and siyempre, eyes to the goal.”
