FEU Gets First Win, UE’s Hubalde Era Opens With Loss

Far Eastern University spoiled Paulo Hubalde’s debut as University of the East’s interim head coach, pulling away from the Red Warriors for a 93-70 victory on Saturday, September 26 in the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Red Warriors stayed within striking distance early, trailing 23-15 after the opening quarter. UE then cut the deficit to six, 23-17, early in the second before FEU responded with a 15-3 run to seize control. By halftime, FEU broke the game open with a 43-29 lead.

FEU continued to widen the gap after the break, with the Tamaraws taking a 65-44 cushion into the fourth quarter. The lead eventually reached 29, 86-57, with 4:19 remaining before FEU closed out its first win of the season.

Five Tamaraws finished in double figures, led by Mo Konateh’s 15 points and nine rebounds. Kirby Mongcopa posted 13 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, while Jorick Bautista also added 13.

Janrey Pasaol and Jedric Daa chipped in 12 points each. 

Toper Lagat led UE with 20 points, while Mo Tañedo and Gene Carillo added 16 and 13, respectively. 

The Red Warriors fell to 0-3 and extended their losing streak to 23 games.

UE will try to break into the win column against UST on September 30 at 2 PM. while FEU will face defending champion La Salle at 5:30 PM.
